Have you noticed a recent tightness or dullness in your skin with changes to your daily environment? Whether you’ve just started using your air conditioner for the warmer seasons or have not quite adjusted your water intake to your new work-from-home routine, the signs point to dehydration in the skin.
Fortunately you don’t have to wait till you can come in and see us to begin addressing it.
Dry vs Dehydrated Skin
First thing’s first - is your skin dry or is it dehydrated?
“Dry skin is a skin type and dehydrated skin is a skin condition,” says Hilarie Mejia, Clinical Aesthetician at SkinSpirit in Walnut Creek, CA.
Dry skin doesn’t produce as much oil as other skin types, making it difficult to retain moisture; this can be combatted with a good moisturizer. Dehydration, on the other hand, occurs when the skin does produce oil but lacks water in the skin; it is variable and can be caused by factors such as climate, travel, diet, alcohol consumption, and water intake.
“Dehydrated skin may also experience breakouts due to constant oil production, yet the top layer lacks hydration,” says Hilarie. “This creates very dry, tight skin blocking the oil below from coming to the surface properly and resulting in blemishes or those small white bumps under the skin, called milia.”
Our Recommendations for Dehydrated Skin
If you’ve found that your skin has become dehydrated at home, we recommend incorporating a hydrator into your skin care routine. Like drinking water helps hydrate you from the inside out, a hydrator can provide nourishment from the outside in, helping to fight against the external variables we mentioned above.
Apply your hydrator before your moisturizer, thinking thinnest to thickest when it comes to the order of your skincare products.
