Laser hair removal is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive treatment that permanently reduces unwanted body hair, giving you long-lasting smooth skin without daily shaving, waxing, or plucking.
Laser hair removal works by converting concentrated laser energy into heat to destroy hair follicles at the root, stopping future hair growth.
Laser hair removal targets facial areas (upper lip, chin, sideburns, eyebrows) and body areas (underarms, arms, legs, back, stomach, bikini line).
It is considered a permanent reduction, though the amount of reduction can vary based on individual factors like hormones and age. SkinSpirit notes that if there has been any regrowth a year after your last treatment, the amount of reduction you have at that point can be considered permanent.
No downtime! You can return to your normal activities immediately. You may experience mild, temporary redness or slight warmth around the treated hair follicles, which typically subsides within a few hours.
Before your Laser Hair Removal appointment, shave the treatment area within 24 hours of your visit, but do not tweeze or wax for at least 2 weeks prior. Avoid all sun exposure for 4 to 6 weeks beforehand to prevent permanent skin discoloration, discontinue antibiotics like doxycycline 7 to 10 days prior, and inform your provider if you have a history of cold sores or herpes so antiviral medication can be recommended. Please see full pre-treatment instructions here.
After your Laser Hair Removal appointment, mild redness, itching, or follicle swelling is normal for 24 to 48 hours and can be treated with 1% hydrocortisone cream or cool compresses. Hair will appear to grow back and look spotty for 2 to 3 weeks as treated follicles shed—you may continue to shave as needed. Apply physical sunblock daily, and contact the clinic immediately if you experience hot spots that do not dissipate or increase in heat. Please see full post-treatment instructions here.
Our patients don't typically describe laser hair removal as painful. The sensation can feel similar to that of a rubber band hitting your skin.
While the exact number of treatments can vary depending on which area you are having treated, how your hair grows, and hair type and color, laser hair removal generally requires 8-10 visits to achieve the best results.
Laser hair removal sessions can often be performed on the same day as your consultation, provided the treatment area is cleanly shaved, free of recent sun exposure or tanning, and you have not recently used any contraindicated medications or skincare products. We recommend contacting your local clinic in advance to confirm provider availability and any pre-treatment instructions.
